Key Lessons from the Dumri Election Campaign
Every election campaign teaches something new. The Dumri MLA campaign for Jairam Mahto was a masterclass in ground-level political strategy. Having been part of the strategic core team, I want to share the most important lessons that every aspiring political strategist must understand.
Lesson 1 — Data is Your Most Powerful Tool
Before any speech, rally or poster, we spent weeks collecting and analysing booth-level data. Which booths were strong, which were weak, which were swing booths — this data shaped our entire resource allocation strategy. In modern elections, gut feeling must be backed by data.
Lesson 2 — The Candidate's Authenticity Cannot Be Manufactured
Jairam Mahto's biggest strength was his authenticity. He spoke the language of the people, shared their struggles and was genuinely committed to their welfare. As a strategist, you can amplify authenticity but you cannot create it. Choose your candidate wisely.
Lesson 3 — Booth Management Wins Elections
Elections in India are ultimately won at the booth level. Having a reliable, motivated agent at every booth who knows every voter by name is worth more than any expensive advertisement. We invested heavily in booth committee training and it paid off handsomely on polling day.
Lesson 4 — Listen Before You Speak
The biggest mistake many campaigns make is pushing their agenda without first understanding what voters actually want. In Dumri, we conducted extensive listening sessions in villages before finalising our campaign issues. The result was messaging that felt personal and relevant to every voter.
Lesson 5 — Youth Volunteers are Game Changers
Young volunteers bring energy, digital savvy and credibility with the youth voter base. We built a dedicated youth brigade for the Dumri campaign that managed digital outreach, rally mobilisation and last-mile voter contact. Their contribution was invaluable.
Lesson 6 — Stay Calm on Election Day
By election day, all the work is done. The strategist's job on polling day is to ensure maximum voter turnout in strong booths and manage the logistics smoothly. Panic is your enemy — preparation is your friend.
Final Thought
Political strategy is ultimately the art of connecting a good leader with the people who need that leadership. When that connection is genuine, strategy merely provides the channel. The Dumri campaign reminded me why I am passionate about both education and public service — both are about empowering people to realise their full potential.
